Bentley drops 19, Sabers Cruise over Teachers Prep

By: Jonathan Mayers Sports Writer, Class of 2021

Fresh off of an easy victory over The School for the Classics last Thursday, the Sabers improved to 3-0 with a 64-36 victory this afternoon over Teacher’s Prep.  Strong three point shooting and clever 2-2-1 full court trap defense contributed to the 28 point blowout victory.

Naquon Bentley fires from 3

This season, Uncommon Collegiate Charter’s Senior Naquan Bentley joined the UCHS PSAL Varsity team, and has added his killer three point shooting to the team’s highly balanced offense. Bentley’s astonishing 3 pointer to open the 3rd quarter enabled him to take off, as he scored 12 points in the period including a couple of smooth finishes at the rim, to put the Sabers up 35 points heading into the 4th quarter.

When asked how he improved his three point shooting over the summer this is what he had to say:

”I go to the park every day, and I don’t leave until I make 150 shots.  First I start at the free throw line, then I go to the 3 point line.”

Head Coach Andrew Wright also had this to say about Naquon’s addition to the team and how it has allowed the Sabers to start off with an impressive 3-0 record.

“Anytime you get a senior it is our priority as coaches and adults to help that senior get to college. Naquon has worked his butt off in school as well.”

Coach also broke down that “the 2-2-1 defense is a variation of the 1-2-2 defense to manipulate the [opposing] offense and speed them up.  We’re trying to figure it out now, so that it can help us later on down the year.”

The Sabers ended the 2nd quarter on an 8-2 run sparked by senior Joel Carty’s impressive 5 blocks and Bentley’s back to back 3 pointers to put the Sabers up 22-8 heading into the 3rd quarter. Bentley’s phenomenal shooting gave confidence to his fellow teammates, as junior Caleb Brown played a different style this game, displaying his court vision by finding junior forward Justin Phillips for and easy bucket just one of his 10 assists.

The Sabers will look to stay undefeated when they host Maxwell tomorrow, December 4th at 4:30pm in the gym.
